Vienna - Zagreb (InterCity Scenic Train)

The Journey

One of the most spectacular rail journeys in Europe is between Zagreb and Vienna (Wien). The route passes through the Austrian Alps, with passengers treated to spectacular mountain views. Besides the scenery, it is also one of the quickest and cheapest routes between Austria and Croatia.

A bar service is available on the route, in both directions. Both first and second class tickets are available.

InterCity Trains

The InterCity (often abbreviated to IC) name is often applied to long-distance national and international rail services across Europe. As a result, there is no single operator of IC services, but rather the term is used to describe the type of service and ensures a minimum standard of speed and quality.

InterCity services generally offer both first and second classes of accommodation, with food and drink often available in buffet carriages or via a trolley service.

Smoking is generally not permitted on IC services in Europe.

Luggage restrictions on IC services are generally much less stringent than airlines operating on similar routes. Passengers are usually permitted to carry two items of luggage with them, with different operators enforcing different restrictions with regards to travelling with pets or bulky items.

There is only one direct train in each direction per day. If these timings don't suit you however, you could travel via Maribor and Zidani Most. There is also an alternative srevice between Vienna and Zagreb that travels via Maribor and Zidani Most. From Vienna, the service departs Wien Meidling at 16.02, and arriving at Zagreb at 22.37. From Zagreb the service departs at 07.25, arriving at Wien Meidling  at 13.59.
